Mold Remediation – What to Expect
Here are some key things you can expect during a typical mold remediation process:
- Initial inspection – A certified mold inspector will do a thorough inspection to identify areas of mold growth, moisture issues, and scope of work.
- Containment setup – The remediation team will isolate the affected areas from the rest of the home using plastic sheeting barriers. This protects other areas from spreading mold spores during work.
- Air scrubbing and extraction – HEPA air scrubbers and negative air pressure extraction units will be used to remove mold spores from the air.
- Mold removal – Using protective gear, the team will remove affected materials like drywall and insulation, as well as use biocides or anti-microbial chemicals to kill and remove mold.
- Structural drying – Once mold sources are removed, commercial drying equipment like dehumidifiers will be used to dry any underlying moisture sources like leaks. This prevents further mold growth.
- Post-remediation testing – Air sampling tests will be conducted to ensure mold spore levels are back to acceptable parameters after work is complete.
- Finishing work – Any repairs, replacements, painting etc will be done to return the remediated areas back to pre-loss condition.
- Waste disposal – All moldy materials will be properly disposed of according to hazardous waste regulations and procedures.
- Verification – You should be provided documentation like a certificate verifying the mold remediation process meets standards and the areas are safe for re-occupancy.
- Warranty – Most companies offer a warranty (1-5 years typically) against future mold growth in the remediated areas.
The process usually takes 2-5 days depending on the extent of the mold problem. The site should be monitored after to ensure mold does not return.
